Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Physician Recognized for Contributions to Healthcare

CHATHAM-KENT: June 14, 2018 - Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) is pleased to celebrate the accomplishments of Dr. Susan Munro, a local Family Medicine Physician, for her award from Western University, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.  Dr. Munro received the Schulich Award of Excellence for Faculty in Community/Distributed Sites at an event in London, Ontario on May 30, 2018.

The Schulich Award of Excellence for Faculty in Community/Distributed Sites recognizes outstanding faculty educators in Southwestern Ontario who display exceptional interest and enthusiasm for the learning needs of trainees of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. Dr. Munro demonstrates her ongoing commitment to the education of trainees in her roles as Director of Medical Education with CKHA and Regional Academic Director with Schulich School of Medicine.

"Teaching Family Medicine Residents, who choose our Chatham-Kent site for training, has been a privilege for me and all the family doctors and specialists who are involved. Teaching helps us keep up-to-date and makes us better physicians. It is also very gratifying to see that many of our residents continue to practice in Chatham-Kent after completing our program. They work as our ER Docs, Hospitalists, Delivering OB Family Docs, Nursing Home / LTC Docs and community family physicians. This is so important for an area that, not so long ago, had great difficulty recruiting physicians," says Dr. Munro. "I would like to thank my local colleagues and the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University for their enthusiastic support in helping us develop such a successful program."

Dr. Munro is a founding member of the Thamesview Family Health Team and was instrumental in developing the practice as a core teaching site for family medicine. She served as Site Director for the Family Medicine Residency Training program in Chatham-Kent for its first five years and she continues to provide high quality mentorship and teaching to the medical students and residents. Well-respected in the community for her comprehensive approach to care, she has previously been recognized by the Ontario College of Family Physicians with an Award of Excellence.

"Dr. Munro is a highly valued and respected physician at CKHA and within our community. Her demonstrated leadership, teaching ability and willingness to help learners makes her an exemplary role model and an educational leader," says Lori Marshall, President & CEO, CKHA. "On behalf of CKHA, I extend my sincere congratulations to Dr. Munro for her ongoing commitment to CKHA and the healthcare community as a whole."

Dr. Munro completed her residency at McMaster University and has been teaching for Western University for 10 years. CKHA is a teaching site for the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, annually accepting three home based physicians in training.
